TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty said that the negotiation for the purchase of BrahMos cruise missiles is awaiting the visit of Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to Indonesia.
"Of course, it is part of the negotiation, but we are awaiting the visit of the Indian Defense Minister, and we will see how it goes," said Sandeep at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Indonesia is reportedly interested in buying BrahMos, Indian-made cruise missiles.
Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi revealed the potential for BrahMos missile technology collaboration during a meeting with Indonesian Navy Chief Admiral Muhammad Ali and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin in Jakarta on December 16, 2024.
Muhammad Ali explained the opportunity for defense technology collaboration, including BrahMos missiles, as one of the topics during his meeting with Tripathi.
However, Ali was reluctant to comment much, especially regarding the possibility of purchasing BrahMos missiles. He stated that the procurement of defense equipment is under the authority of the Defense Ministry.
"Regarding the issue of defense equipment related to BrahMos missiles, indeed this is one option, a possibility. We are still reviewing whether the Defense Ministry will choose that, but later, it is up to the Defense Ministry to decide," Ali was quoted as saying by Antara.
The plan to purchase BrahMos is gaining strength. Muhammad Ali visited the BrahMos missile factory while attending an invitation to the India Republic Day Parade on January 26, 2025.
Chief of Information Service of the Navy (Kadispenal) First Admiral I Made Wira Hady Arsanta Wardhana said that the visit aimed to strengthen bilateral and military relations between Indonesia and India.
"This visit also coincides with the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-India bilateral relations. This is one of the strong reasons for the Indonesian President to be chosen as the main guest," said Wira, as quoted by Antara.
Wira said that the Navy Chief not only visits the BrahMos missile factory but also the Weapon and Electronic System Engineering Establishment (WESEE) in New Delhi.
