Kings of the dance floor: Viswanathan Anand, D Gukesh steal the show with their moves at Vidit Gujrathi’s wedding
The wedding guest list also featured stars like Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, and even Dutch GM Anish Giri, who attended with his wife IM Sopiko Guramishvili.

India’s chess elite recently proved they’re not just grandmasters on the board—but off it too. The wedding of GM Vidit Gujrathi and Nidhi Kataria on April 2 turned into a celebration of love, laughter, and dance moves, something no one saw coming.
The event held in Pune brought together some of the biggest names in chess. From the legendary Viswanathan Anand to current world champion D Gukesh, the guest list also featured stars like Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, and even Dutch GM Anish Giri, who attended with his wife IM Sopiko Guramishvili.
While the wedding itself was a grand affair, what truly stole the spotlight were the unexpected dance performances. Viral clips from the celebration show Gukesh grooving to Badri Ki Dulhania with full energy, while Anand—known for his calm demeanour—surprised everyone with his swagged-out moves to Main Hoon Don.

I AM LAUGHING, CRYING, SCREAMING ALL AT THE SAME….NEVER HAVE I EVER THOUGHT I WOULD SEE GUKESH DANCING IN “BADRI KI DULHANIA” OR VISHY SIR IN “MEIN HOON DON”

The Internet couldn’t get enough. “Never thought I would watch Vishy Anand saab dance to Don,” one user wrote in disbelief. Another user said, “No more chess moves, we got moves on stage.” And a third joked, “Colleague aur dost ki shadi mein kya kya karna parta hai (What one needs to do at a friend’s or a colleague’s wedding).”
Another clip showed Gukesh busting moves to Hindi pop tracks, with Giri and Sopiko joining him.

Gukesh, who made history in December 2024 by becoming the youngest-ever world chess champion after toppling Ding Liren, seems to be embracing the spotlight. Despite facing criticism from veterans like Magnus Carlsen, the 18-year-old is unfazed. As he told the Times of India, “When you reach the World Championship, criticism is inevitable. People are free to say what they want. I focus on my job, and negative comments only motivate me.”
Currently ranked No. 3 in the world, Gukesh is gearing up for the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour in Paris from April 7 to 14. He’ll be joined by Anand, Gujrathi, Erigaisi (now World No. 4), Praggnanandhaa, Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Vincent Keymer—making it a clash of titans both on and off the board.
