Sherri Shepherd left Dancing With the Stars in tears in 2012, but the talk show host and comedian has finally spilled the funny — and relatable — truth about why she cried.
On the Thursday, April 3 edition of her daytime television talk show Sherri, the 57-year-old got real about her week three ousting from season 14 of the dancing competition show. Though many thought she had a meltdown over a botched paso doble, Shepherd made it clear with a chuckle.
"Others believed that I was in tears because I had not performed my paso doble properly," she said. "But I was actually crying because I was tabulating my bills."
Shepherd had grand ideas for her Dancing With the Stars check when she was doing it — and her premature departure set a monkey wrench into her budget. "I was gonna use the money to pay Jeffrey's tuition and my house," she confessed. "I gotta return that car because I thought I was gonna win the Mirror Ball. I need money!"
Shepherd, one of the co-hosts of The View between 2007 and 2014, also gave an insider's view of the money side of reality television. "It is in the contestant's best interest to do well on these shows," she told us. "The more you stay on, the more you earn."
Even with the disappointing result, Shepherd is not bitter. Together with professional partner Val Chmerkovskiy on her season, she looked back on her time on the show fondly. "It was one of the best experiences I ever had because I love to dance," she said.
Although she didn't take home the Mirror Ball Trophy, Shepherd's integrity and wit still shine — reminding viewers that often, even the most sensational TV moments have a very real-world explanation behind them.
