Nothing fake about Corey Grant's big-play speed for Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Corey Grant carries the ball against the Los Angeles Chargers during an NFL game on Nov. 12, 2017, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Including the preseason, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Corey Grant has broken three runs of at least 51 yards after taking a snap in punt formation.

After executing a fake punt "perfectly" three times in such a short period, Grant doesn't know if he'll get another chance.

"I know up to this point and further on, a team is going to expect the fake with me in there, so there's no telling what kind of looks we're going to get now," Grant told the Florida Times-Union.

That's what Jacksonville is waiting for to run the fake -- "a certain look" from the opposing defense.

"If a team is giving us a certain look, I trust the guys," Grant said. "I want them to call it, but my nerves spike up. It's fourth down, and the team is depending on you to move the chains."

Jacksonville coach Doug Marrone said the Jaguars are always ready to turn the Auburn alumnus loose -- given the right look.

"I think when you put things in there, you have to go and run it," Marrone said. "It's something that the players practice, and if you get what you want and you get the look, then obviously we're going to make the call."

The Jaguars made the call last week against the Los Angeles Chargers, and Grant broke away on a 56-yard touchdown run in Jacksonville's 20-17 victory.

On Sept. 24, Grant took a short snap in punt formation and ran 58 yards in a 44-7 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

In a preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 24, Grant ran 51 yards from punt formation.

Grant finished the preseason as the leading rusher in the AFC, even though he carried the ball only 22 times. The former Opelika High School star got more than two-thirds of his 191 yards on two runs -- the fake punt and a 79-yard touchdown sprint from scrimmage against the New England Patriots.

In the regular season, Grant has served as an occasional change of pace to Jacksonville running backs Leonard Fournette, Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon. He's rushed for 179 yards on 20 carries this season -- 65 yards on 18 carries from scrimmage and 114 yards on two carries from punt formation.

Grant also has returned seven kickoffs for a 24.9-yard average in 2017.

The team on the lookout for Grant on fourth down on Sunday will be the Cleveland Browns. Jacksonville visits Cleveland at noon CST.

After winning only one game last season, the Browns are still winless nine games into this season. Jacksonville also had a bad finish in 2016 with just three victories. But the Jaguars have a 6-3 record in 2017 and would have a one-game lead in the AFC South if they defeat Cleveland.

Jacksonville already has more victories than it has had in any season since going 8-8 in 2010. The Jaguars are in pursuit of their first playoff berth since 2007.
