Globally with EVs taking a center stage, German automaker Volkswagen s all set to launch an array of new products and we could see a set of new electric Volkswagen cars being rolled out in 2020. The company first showcased its Volkswagen I.D. hatchback and the reviled the I.D. Buzz microbus with designs similar to its classic heritage bus and in 2017 at the Shanghai Auto show, Volkswagen then expanded its I.D. portfolio with the introduction of Volkswagen I.D. Crozz. Reports now confirm that the Volkswagen I.D. line will enter production globally in November 2019.
Volkswagen I.D. Crozz electric crossover vehicle will further expand VW’s electric range of products and will also be the first SUV like designed electric vehicle. Volkswagen says the production vehicle of this model will go on sale in America in 2020. So in about 18 months from now, we expect to see the production version of I.D Crozz concept. This will also help the German automaker to achieve its 1 million sales goal in EVs by 2025.
Volkswagen I.D. Crozz is based on the company’s MEB platform built for compact electric cars. The styling on the vehicle might remind you combines the looks of an SUV and a four-door coupe, but that’s, of course, the production vehicle. The production version might not look as aggressive as the concept. Currently, the Crozz concept sloping roofline giving that extra sporty look. Expect roomy interiors thanks to MEB platforms longer wheelbase and efficient use of space in packing electric powertrain. The battery is likely to be placed on the floor even on the production version.
Volkswagen I.D. Crozz will be powered by two electric motors, one for each axle and combined will have a power output of over 300 hp. The batter duties will be done by a 83-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that claims a range of 311 miles as per European testing cycle. The vehicle will also get fast charging as an option on top-variants.
Currently, the concept features VW’s I.D. Pilot autonomous driving mode, which is activated by pressing the VW logo on the steering wheel. The cabin is filled with gadgets and also features a 10.2-inch infotainment system. The company starts to begin the production of its I.D. family of electric vehicles in 2020.
While Europe and USA will be VW’s top market for electric vehicles, both the I.D. Crozz and I.D. hatchback (e-Golf replacement) makes sense for India especially when Government is pushing for EVs in India. If the required infrastructure for EVs comes up soon in India, expect Volkswagen to be one of the first to start its groundwork in India for not just introduction of its EVs but also to localize the manufacturing of India relevant cars.
More on EVs and much more on Volkswagen I.D. line-up will be revealed at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show scheduled in early March and Express Drives will be there to bring you all the development on this front.
